Ashley Carr - What’s Your New Decade Resolution?

Ladies and gentlemen, a new decade is upon us. This January, instead of the faddish and cliché New Year’s Resolutions, why don’t we make some New Decade Resolutions? What do we want our lives to look like in 2030? Where do we want our business or career to be? What do we want for our family and our relationships? Where do we want to be living and in what sort of home? I am a very boring student at times. I have listened to hundreds of hours of interviews and lectures from some of the world’s best and brightest, and have read many of their books. In this article, I will be dispensing some of the greatest advice that I’ve heard from these luminaries to help make the 2020’s the best decade yet.

There is a very famous book by Stephen Covey which I would recommend called The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. Habit number 2, in this book, is ‘begin with the end in mind’. What this means is that we first need to have a goal and then work backwards, with the steps needed to get there.

There have been studies that show that, on average, we waste 3 hours per day. They usually define time wasted as watching TV and time spent on social media. Some simple maths : 3 x 7 x 52 = 1092. That’s 1092 hours wasted every year. Converted to days, that’s an eye-watering 45 days, or a month and a half! Surely we can find better uses of life’s most precious commodity than watching another episode of The Kardashians or scrolling aimlessly through our Facebook feed  (only stopping to notice someone we went to secondary school with has made a nice linguine). Being aware of how we spend our time could hold the key to a successful decade.

Finally, are we in the right careers? Many people tell themselves “I’m just going to do this for a little while”. A little while becomes too long pretty quickly. Warren Buffett has a great quote “taking jobs to build up your resume is the same as saving up sex for your old age”. Our career is the second most important choice we will make after our romantic partner, and we will spend more time doing our job than anything else! Let’s ensure we are setting ourselves up for a happy and healthy decade by making sure we are in the right careers, Grow readers.
