Brexit Ready Exeter - Intellectual Property Protection Post-Brexit
Brexit Ready Exeter – 29th October 2019
Brexit is quickly approaching, bringing change for businesses of all sizes and in every sector. Being prepared is essential. Brexit Ready Exeter, a collaboration between Exeter Chamber of Commerce and InExeter, has brought together expert advisors delivering practical advice and non-political guidance in a series of easily accessible, free events to ensure that Exeter businesses are not facing these changes alone and unsupported.
The free Brexit Readiness Training on Tuesday 29th October includes all aspects of Brexit with a focus on a no deal scenario. The training covers the central topics of Employment, Data, Funding, Selling to the Public Sector, Intellectual Property and Import and Export.
Practical Preparation without Politics
Ahead of the Brexit Readiness Training day on 29th October we caught up with experts Stephen Jones and Charlotte Bolton from Michelmores LLP, who will be leading a workshop to unravel the changes to Intellectual Property.
The focus of the workshop will look at the effects of Brexit on intellectual property rights, including the effect of the loss of any transitional period.
Charlotte Bolton, Associate in Michelmores’ Commercial Dispute Resolution Team specialising in brand and reputation management issues, particularly intellectual property infringement disputes, defamation and harassment matters, says,
“We will examine the EU registration systems for trademarks and designs after exit from the EU, as well as provisions for the continuation of existing registrations and rights for the UK. Our workshop will also address other intellectual property rights, together with the question of reciprocity if the UK leaves without a deal.”
She continues,
“To counteract a degree of Brexit uncertainty we also spotlight the continuity of the UK as an effective forum for the litigation and arbitration of IP disputes and English law as the law of choice in IP transactions.”
Stephen Jones, consultant with Michelmores’ IP team with 40 years of experience in intellectual property matters including patents, trademarks, copyright and designs, says,
“We will also consider the status of the European Patent Convention and the role of UK-based European Patent Attorneys and how they will continue to represent clients before the European Patent Office after the UK leaves the EU. We will also look at the extent to which the UK may be involved with proposals for the introduction of a Unitary Patent for some EU member states, and a Unified Patent Court.”
