I once stumbled across a quote by sixteenth century English philosopher Francis Bacon who
quipped, “Money is like manure. Of very little use except it be spread.”

Before you get worried though, don’t fear, this short note to you isn’t an Ode to The Red
Star, yearning for the establishment of the elusive Communist dream.

As I sit here and muse this month’s theme of ‘Money, Finance and Assets’ I am struck by the
power that lies in the hands of those who are willing to give away, donate, invest or
ethically spend their hard earned pounds and pennies.

You really don’t have to look far into the world to see how destructive money can be in the
wrong hands. To put it bluntly, boundless Capitalism certainly has its hellish pitfalls, given
the human propensity for greed and corruption.

However, in the right hands, money is an almost unstoppable force for good – unlocking
doors, bringing liberation, providing options and leading to significant and lasting change,
for people, communities and even nations.

Perhaps, as the old saying goes, ‘Money is a great servant, but a bad master.’

I wonder what the world would be like if we all tried to be a little more selfless with our
money…?
