Here We Grow: Avakitty

This month we feature a new startup business called Avakitty, makers of educational wooden cubes.

We asked Becky, to give us a little background on the business:

My brother is a carpenter so the love of wood has always been part of our family. I have a 4-year-old daughter and we started writing names and numbers on some plain blocks that he had lying around in his workshop. She loved stacking them and started counting!

I realised that I could make learning to spell your name or counting from one to five, a lot more fun, so reached for my paints! My daughter is my inspiration for the ideas and designs that we produce, getting her feedback is invaluable, plus wooden toys are so durable.

I’ve also always had a passion for crafts and qualified in interior design. I have a passion for focussing on products that can be personalised with modern colours and that fit into any home, nursery or playroom.

Describe your typical customer and how you plan to reach them:

Our personalised toys and decorative items have proven to be very popular and are great for baby showers, new baby gifts and birthdays as well as being a colourful addition to a child’s nursery. My main focus, however, is the educational route - I’ve just launched a numerical set and had some amazing feedback from local preschools and primary schools. I plan to roll out to more schools across Exeter over the next 3 months. It’s a fun way to engage a child in learning basic and more advanced sums as the blocks encourage tactile perception and help improve eye-hand coordination.

Local support has been amazing, I love receiving all the comments and images of how the cubes are being used. We’ve also been included in two editions of baby and mother magazine, Gurgle, and had positive feedback from them - our cubes are ‘fresh, modern with great learning benefits’.

And finally, what plans do you have for the future?

At the moment, cubes are our main product, we sell and ship them all over the UK and even around the world. We are currently putting the finishing touches to our wooden house range - the house is cut and painted and also stackable like our cubes. We have many exciting projects to launch over the next 6 months, watch this space!
