DASLS – Devon & Somerset Law Society Awards 2019
President of DASLS, Stephen Mahoney:
It is my privilege as President to launch DASLS Legal Awards for 2019. Since its inception, the Awards has grown in stature year on year and 2019 promises to be the most impressive yet, with the Awards Evening and Annual Dinner taking place in the spectacular surroundings of Exeter Cathedral on 4th April.
The purpose of the Awards has been to increase public awareness of the Legal Profession throughout Devon and Somerset; to recognise and celebrate the achievements of winning firms and individuals and those shortlisted in each of the categories; to give Solicitors and their staff an increased sense of pride in what they do.
I have no doubt that the Awards have delivered on all these aims and it has been good to see winning firms themselves publicising their successes in their literature, on their websites and through the Press.
We have a new media partner this year in the shape of Grow Marketing Limited. Although a young company Grow’s team is packed with experience of working for National Newspapers and a wide variety of other media organisations.
They are already bringing fresh energy and enthusiasm to the many tasks which need to be undertaken before we reach the big night itself in April.
Grow are truly excited to be working with DASLS and I am certain will do everything they can to make 2019 our biggest and best Awards yet. I urge you to get on board early and ride this wave of energy, enthusiasm and belief in how important our Legal Awards can be. April may seem a long way off but the deadline for submission of nominations will be before the end of November.
Experience shows Lawyers’ lives are driven by deadline and, in previous years, the submission of Awards nominations has followed that deadline culture, with ‘last minute’ entries. I invite you to surprise me, buck the trend and beat the crowd this time round!
Joff Alexander-Frye, Editor of Grow Exeter Magazine
“We are hugely proud and delighted to have agreed this landmark partnership with DASLS. They are an excellent organisation who provide a truly exceptional service to their members and we feel perfectly positioned to deliver a truly excellent service to both them and their members. This firmly cements us as the foremost provider of marketing and PR support for professional services organisations in the area and we look forward with excitement and energy to this partnership.”
Alexis Bowater is an award-winning journalist and presenter. She started her career working on newspapers and then worked for ITV in the Westcountry for 15 years, anchoring the main six o’clock news for almost ten of them.
As a reporter, she covered myriad stories, from the High Court to the traditional ‘and finallys’. During her years as a journalist, she was stalked three times which culminated in 2009 when the final stalker was jailed for four years and one month.
Her journalistic campaigning abilities transferred to her job as Chief Executive of the national charity, Network for Surviving Stalking, where she worked to help change the law in the UK. She successfully campaigned to introduce stalking and support services for victims into the Istanbul Convention, covering all 47 member states of the Council of Europe.
After that, Alexis founded her own company, Bowater Communications, which offers expert media advice, PR, media training, strategy and communications advice, on a short or long-term basis. With her decades of experience in the industry on both sides of the camera, she has a unique perspective on how to communicate in this multi-media world.
Alexis and her team offer top of the range bespoke packages – whether PR, training, filmmaking, writing or devising a PR strategy.
Because of her experiences over the years and her work to combat violence against women and girls, Alexis loves to help recognise women in business for their achievements and is a Regional Partner for the Venus Women Awards. She also hosts Women’s Networking Groups in Devon: Plymouth Women in Business and Exeter Women in Business.
Sampson Hall are delighted to be supporting the 2019 DASLS Awards. The awards highlight and showcase some of the amazing professional talent, expertise and knowledge amongst our Devon and Somerset Law practitioners. We are especially proud to be sponsoring the category of Leader of the Year; as for us in these modern turbulent times, leadership attributes are often more relevant than management controls. The legal profession needs to recognise and reward its truly inspirational leaders as they are the ones who will inspire the profession to greater heights as the challenges of today’s environment come to bear.
DASLS affords the opportunity of the sharing of best practice across the South West legal profession in order to ensure that our lawyers and their teams are amongst the best in the land.

We are now sole sponsors for the “Rising Star Award” which is a new category, recognizing those members of the team who are just setting out in their careers – these are the ones to watch! We are proud to be a part of this event and we’re delighted that it encourages and supports innovation, integrity and leadership in the legal profession and provides a strong focus for lawyers in the region. We love how the event demonstrates the depth of expertise and quality of services available from solicitors in Devon & Somerset and we are very proud to be part of this.
Each year the standard of entry for these awards is very high, even to be nominated is a huge achievement in itself! The night itself is always spectacular with wonderful music and speakers it’s very well organised, we look forward to continuing to sponsor such a great event in years to come.

The DASLS Awards are now a fixture on the annual calendar and are designed to celebrate success and raise the profile of the solicitors’ profession. PKF Francis Clark
PKF Francis Clark is delighted to sponsor the Solicitor of the Year category at the DASLS Legal Awards 2019. We recognise that these awards are one of the most significant annual events; recognising both individual achievements and more widely the value that the legal profession brings to the business community across Devon and Somerset.
The DASLS Legal Awards not only showcase the quality of the legal expertise across the region but they also help to demonstrate to the wider business community the extent and diversity of professional advice available in the South West.
Over the last 22 years Devon Community Foundation has been providing Funding, Philanthropic Advice and Support to our communities across the county. Whether that has been through a grant to a small local charity, investment for a social enterprise, launching a fund for a private donor identifying causes to matching their aim. All of this requires partnership and collaboration.
Research from STEP indicates 60% of Private Client solicitors expect the demand for Philanthropic Advice to continue to grow. Working in partnership with you we can help you to provide this advice, enabling your clients to achieve their philanthropic aims and deepening your client relationships.
Supporting the DASLS last year was a great way to raise awareness across the legal sector of what we do. Hearing how the awards have evolved this year makes it really exciting to be a part of it again and we look forward to raising the awareness of what the Foundation can do for you and your clients.
