All New Exeter Festival 2019; A Showcase For The City

The all new Exeter Festival 2019 will showcase everything great about the city and promises to be one of the summer’s biggest and best events.

Held in Northernhay Gardens and other locations around the city between Friday, 5 July and Sunday, 7 July, it promises to be a weekend of fun – with live music, outdoor film screenings and bags of activities for the whole family.

All events are either free or affordable, and organisers want as many people as possible to enjoy the fun and celebrate the great things happening in the city.

There will be a fully licensed bar, food and drink and a host of stalls throughout the weekend in Northernhay Gardens.

Exeter Festival 2019 starts on Friday, 5th July, with Exeter Festival Films in the Park. Residents and visitors can catch outdoor screenings of magical musical The Greatest Showman and hit Queen movie Bohemian Rhapsody in the beautiful surroundings of the park.

The Greatest Showman, an original musical that celebrates the birth of show business and tells of a visionary who rose from nothing to create a spectacle that became a worldwide sensation, will be screened at 5pm.

Tickets are on sale now for only £7 adults (including booking fee) and £4 Under 16s (including booking fee). A Family Ticket (four people, with at least on adult) is £18, and it’s free for under threes.

Bohemian Rhapsody, a foot stomping celebration of Queen, their music and their extraordinary lead singer Freddie Mercury, will be screened at 8pm. Loved by fans and critics alike, this film has rightly claimed all the top accolades, including an Oscar for the brilliant performance by Rami Malek as the flamboyant Freddie.

Bohemian Rhapsody at Exeter Festival 2019

On Saturday, 6th July, the focus of Exeter Festival 2019 will switch to the best in live music.

The Exeter Festival in the Park is a real musical treat featuring the best of local talent during an afternoon of live music from local bands and performers from 12pm to 5pm.  And it’s all completely free throughout the day!

On Saturday evening the festival highlight is a top musical extravaganza, with sets from multi-platinum chart-topping band The Hoosiers, and high-energy 10-piece band Joey the Lips, performing funk, soul, blues and disco.

These two bands are set to rock the night away in front of a packed park – it is genuinely not be missed. Tickets are on sale now for only £11.

On Sunday, 7th July, it’s family day. The day starts with another film screening, the family-friendly hit Mary Poppins Returns, which will be screened at 10am. Fifty four years on from the classic original, bring the whole family for a supercalifragilisticexpialidocious experience.

On Sunday afternoon, from 12pm to 4pm, it’s the Exeter Festival Funday in the Park. The family day will be hosted by popular Exeter DJ and presenter Chris Dinnis – and it’s all completely free.

There will be an afternoon of performances, demonstrations and activities to get everyone up and moving, including a four-hour programme of demonstrations on the stage, delivered by Legacy Leisure and dance company Capoeira Libertacao. There’s no need to book – just turn up and enjoy the fun.

A host of organisations are putting on activities at Exeter Festival 2019, including Exeter City Community Trust, Planet Earth Games, St Luke’s School, South West Athletics Academy, Committed Dance Company, Ride On, Tennis for Free, Active Devon, Devon Wildlife Trust and Freemoovement.

There’s also a chance to discover The Blue Boy Trail – a new family walking trail taking in all the sights of the City, as a way of discovering the city’s heritage. Families will be encouraged to pick up a map and find all the Blue Boys for a chance to win a prize.

Exeter Festival 2019 is not all about Northernhay Gardens – there’s festival fun and events going on right across the city.

Highlights include:

  • Nuts and Volts bring their special brand of walkabout theatre to the city centre, so get your dancing shoes on and prepare to Floss with the Insta Gramma’s who get down and groovy on Saturday, 6th July or join the Pundits as they commentate on your sporting prowess on Sunday, 7th July, between 12pm and 5pm.
  • The three-day Exeter Craft Festival 2019 is a celebration of the very best artists and makers based in the South West is one of the major highlights of Exeter’s cultural calendar. It takes place at Exeter historic Cathedral Green from 4th-6th July.
  • Inspired by the street bands of New Orleans, the Exeter Festival Jazz Band is a happy amalgamation of the talents of local jazz musicians combining to play in the style of the 1920s and 30s. This joyous music is sure to set the feet tapping at Eastgate (by Next) on Friday, 5th July, 2.30pm-4pm.
  • Exeter Comedy Club has been bringing the very best acts from the national stand-up circuit to the Corn Exchange for more than two decades. Every show features four top performers. The Exeter Festival Comedy Club takes place on Friday, 5th July, doors open 7.45pm. For tickets visit exetercornexchange.co.uk
  • Planet Earth Games is the world’s first environment themed multi-sport event provides a unique Olympic and Paralympic-style experience for young people and their families whilst sharing the best in sustainability in sport and beyond. It take place in Exeter on Saturday, 6th July at Exwick Sports Hub and Flowerpot Playing Fields throughout the day.
  • Exeter’s first ever Craft Beer Festival will be held on Exeter Quay and is a must for all beer lovers. Hosted jointly by Topsham Brewery and the Exeter Round Table Group, it is free of charge to the public. It takes place on Saturday, 6th July, from 11am to 10pm.
