Stagecoach South West Partner With St Luke’s Hospice For Elmer’s Big Parade Plymouth
Stagecoach South West is putting its weight behind a mammoth awareness and fundraising campaign for St Luke’s Hospice Plymouth, a charity that provides support and care for people with a life-limiting illness and those close to them across Plymouth, South West Devon and South East Cornwall. St Luke’s Hospice is delighted to announce Stagecoach South West as the Presenting Partner for Elmer’s Big Parade Plymouth*.
The exciting sculpture trail with a difference is set to be Devon and Cornwall’s biggest public art event for 10 weeks this summer (8 July – 16 September). It is estimated the colourful parade of 40 unique elephants will attract 250,000 visitors to explore the trail, raising vital funds for St Luke’s Hospice Plymouth.
The charity has recruited the beloved children’s storybook favourite Elmer the elephant, plus 40 of his charming chunky chums, for the outdoor trail around Plymouth and surrounding areas. Each sculpture will feature a bespoke design, painted by talented local artists.
As well as turning Plymouth patchwork with the enchanting elephants, St Luke’s is using the campaign to highlight the importance of its vital service and encourage more open and honest conversations about the ‘taboo’ subjects of death, dying and bereavement that can help us all, including schoolchildren who are bereaved and those who strive to support them.
Bob Dennison, Managing Director of Stagecoach South West, said:
“We are thrilled to be Presenting Partner and supporting such a wonderful charity. We will be working to help raise awareness of Elmer’s Big Parade Plymouth and the incredible work done by St Luke’s, and of course help raise vital funds.
“We work to support a range of local community causes in the South West, the very communities we help bring together through our local bus services. It’s fantastic to see the excitement about the trail already starting to build and we are delighted to be backing such a fabulous and worthwhile fundraising campaign.”
The mass participation, family-friendly trail, will delight anyone who comes to explore Britain’s Ocean City and will also raise money to fund the emotional, practical and spiritual support St Luke’s offers. The finale of the Parade will be an auction of the colourful and unique elephant sculptures, enabling St Luke’s to continue to provide outstanding compassionate care for patients at home, in hospital and at its specialist unit at Turnchapel.
Mike Dukes, Commercial Director for St Luke’s, said:
“St Luke’s service reaches way beyond Plymouth which is why it makes perfect sense for Stagecoach South West to be our Presenting Partner for Elmer’s Big Parade Plymouth. Their generous support is invaluable to our charity’s campaign and of course they will be helping thousands of people get to and around the trail on their bus services.
“Having Stagecoach South West as a partner is also important because it will help us reach more people and increase awareness that talking more openly about death, dying and bereavement – which affects us all – ensures that no-one living with loss feels forgotten, isolated or left behind.”
With close to 1200 employees and 380 vehicles, Stagecoach South West connects hundreds of communities across the region, providing over 30 million passenger journeys every year. Stagecoach South West operates local services across Plymouth, as well as the Falcon cross regional coach service from Plymouth to Bristol airport and city centre.
