October Editor’s Letter: Lessons in Listening

The sun is slowly slipping away like summer sand falling through our fingers.

Whether spring cleaning or trying to locate your snow shovel which has become buried in the depths of your shed, there are several points in the year when our minds turn to achieving timed activities based around the seasons. As we move into October, it is one such time as people start to do one last spot of gardening or mowing before the cold and rain set in. As I pondered this, it seemed to click with our theme this month; Relationships & Networking.

Relationships are like gardens. They require attention, thought, dedication, trial, error and commitment. Good relationships also welcome pruning, change and the need to keep things fresh. Business relationships are no different, as we explore in this month’s edition of Grow.

From our front cover conversation with Cath Hill (Service Lead for Communications, Tourism & Culture at Exeter City Council) and a wonderful chat with John Harvey (the enigmatic founder of exclusive networking group The Samphire Club) to Catherine Spencer (former England Women’s Rugby Captain) and Jamie & Gemma Fox (inspirational founders of The Greedy Fox, a range of food seasonings) there is something for everyone in this edition.

Stories of bravery, dedication, overcoming the odds and doing things the right way, not the easy way. I hope you are as inspired and moved by them as our team was meeting them.

This edition also sees the introduction of a few new things; most notably our new East Devon section; something that we will be looking to grow in earnest in the coming months. Also, we have a new columnist in Kate Williams, renowned writer and editor and also ‘Grow Talk’, the first in a new commentary series written by our brand-new Online Content Assistant, Sofy Robertson. Both are excellent pieces which I’m sure you will thoroughly enjoy.

So, as the nights start to draw in and Christmas becomes ‘the C word’ for a few months, let’s think of how we might become ‘better gardeners’; tending to our relationships with the same dedication and focus that the most green-fingered amongst us would their plants or lawns.

Until next month,

JOFF ALEXANDER-FRYE
Group Editor-in-Chief
