Exeter’s Magdalen Road Named In Top Ten Coolest Shopping Areas In The World
Grow Talk by Sofy Robertson
I am happy to admit that I am completely biased in thinking that Exeter is a pretty cool place to live, work and, of course, shop. It seems that my opinion is not entirely untrustworthy as Exeter’s Magdalen Road has been named in the top ten coolest shopping destinations, not just in Exeter, not even just in the UK, but in the world.
Magdalen Road, as well as shopping districts in major destinations like Paris, St Petersburg and Hamburg, has been nominated on the ‘top ten cool shopping districts around the world’ in The Guardian which was drawn up using readers’ tips.
It is Magdalen Road’s wealth of independent shops which “pride themselves on being local and sustainable” that gained it the coveted spot in the top ten destinations (The Guardian). The article describes the street as a “gem of wonderful independently run shops” that sits in “the heart of St Leonards”. In particular, the article cited Leela, a shop that sells “really unusual homeware, gifts, fashion” and ensures that all of its products are “fairtrade and sustainable” as a top pick.
Dan Taylor, who runs neighbouring independent business Grocer on the Green, was equally “chuffed” about the recognition. He tweeted Grow saying:
“[We’re] all really chuffed to bits! Especially @LeelaShop who gets the best mention of all.”
Exeter was recently named one of the fastest growing cities in the UK in terms of its economic growth and locations like Magdalen Road are able to boast the stability of their business structure with many well-established independents and any vacant spaces rapidly being filled.
After the huge success of their independent Christmas market, there are undoubtedly great things in store for Magdalen Road and the businesses that have driven this street to become a world-renowned shopping destination.
