Grow Local: Top Christmas Gifts For 2018 On Your Doorstep

Grow Talk by Sofy Robertson

First and foremost, a dog is for life, not just for Christmas. Grow’s list of local treats to buy your loved ones does not include our gorgeous cover pug. That said, let’s proceed with the article.

My sister and I are polar opposites. For the most part, she will have her Christmas shopping sorted by November, having squirreled things away throughout the year. Me, I’m more of a panic buyer. Every year, Christmas somehow sneaks up on me and with less than a week to go, I’ll be rushing all over town desperately paying any price to make up for my disorganisation. This year, I am (attempting) to make a change.

Now, there is no doubt that the High Street sellers, both online and off, have plenty to offer but if you’re looking for something that bit more special and unique, you’ve come to the right place. As we become increasingly aware of our carbon footprints and the impact of our consumerism, why not buy your loved ones a gift from one of our great local indies.

Aaaaand Relax

Exeter Golf and Country Club Experiences by the Exeter Golf and Country Club £34+

From luxury spa retreats to Sunday lunch with a glass of wine, there are plenty of treats available as gift vouchers at the Golf and Country Club.

Cider by Sandford Orchards, £2.60+

Always a fail-safe Christmas present, rather than buying a generically available cider, why not try a tipple from Crediton-based Sandford Orchards. Choose whether to buy a single bottle, a case of twelve or a 20L bag in a box. With varying strengths and flavours, there is plenty to offer cider-lovers here.

Meat 59 Gift Vouchers, available in denominations of £10

With restaurants in Exeter and Torquay, Meat 59 was created by two passionate foodies, Jenna and her brother-in-law Vince. Undoubtedly one of the best places in Exeter to grab a burger, Meat 59 champions local produce, including local drinks.

Something Special

Jewellery by Polka, prices dependant on purchase

South Devon Chilli Farm Gifts, £5.70+

From sets of chilli sauce to seeds and grow your own equipment, you’ll find plenty here for those friends or family members who love a bit of spice. Something for the House

Furniture by Goodwood Cellars, prices on request

If you’re looking for a slightly more substantial present; a bed, mirror or table and chair set; Goodwood produces their own handmade range, made, of course, from good wood. Based in one of the boat houses on the quayside, this is great place to go for local, unique gifts.

Something for the little ‘uns

Toys and clothing for children available at Darts Farm, prices dependant on purchase

This local farm shop has a great range of unique toys and clothes for the little ones from a range of local and small-scale sellers.
