Destroyer Trailer Drops Revealing Kidman’s Transformation
Grow Talk by Sofy Robertson
At the end of last week, the trailer for gritty crime thriller Destroyer was released. Had I not already known that the film starred Nicole Kidman, I would have had a hard time recognising her.
Starring as LAPD detective Erin Bell, the film tells the story of her undercover mission with a California gang that goes horribly wrong. Rather than being made-up for the role, Kidman has undergone a severe make-under to portray the haggard, world-worn character of Detective Bell.
In speaking about her role, Kidman said:
“I grew up on these kind of films. I watched [Al] Pacino play these roles, I watched all of the men in the ’70s get the chance to do it, but I don’t have a female [equivalent]. That’s exciting as an actress to get the chance to do that.” (Huffington Post)
Destroyer, which is set to hit the big screens in December, is already generating Oscar buzz after it premiered at the Telluride Film Festival last month. Critics raved about Kidman’s performance, calling it her best to date.
From the brief glimpse that the trailer allows, I am inclined to agree. There is no air of previous roles that Kidman has played as she embodies the haggard Detective Bell. She is utterly unrecognisable, not just in her physical appearance, but in her demeanour, her gestures, her voice. All seem transformed for this role and I, for one, will be in line at the cinema come December to find out more about her intriguing, yet disturbing, transformation.
