Spring Forward Saturday Topsham
The arrival of spring doesn’t just mean warmer weather and longer days – it’s also the time for one of Topsham’s favourite events of the year with a carnival-like atmosphere of live music, delicious food and drink, and never-to-be-repeated shopping offers in this popular Exe estuary town.
Spring Forward Saturday is the name of the event, taking place on Saturday March 28 – the day before the clocks go forward.
Now in its third year, this feel-good event involves most of Topsham’s shops, cafés and restaurants with special offers for visitors and locals – and even better deals for holders of the Love Topsham Card, a community initiative promoting the town.
There’s a complimentary glass of wine here, a free Easter egg there, and one artisan craft shop is even offering 25% off everything in stock – for that day only!
Why not take in the pop-up art gallery, a special outdoor fair at the town’s Matthews Hall and the new exhibits at the Topsham Museum on the first day of the new season?
There are special treats for children, too. They can join the adults in awe at the history of Topsham fire station or get down and dirty at a Craft For Kids activity.
Not enough? Then pin back your ears: there will be a wide range of toe-tapping and hip-wiggling musical groups providing entertainment throughout the day.
Travelling around the town will be The Exmouth Shantymen – they call themselves the original buoy band! – who have performed all over the world including the Olympics.
There will also be performances by The Liberty Sisters, a harmony singing trio recreating songs from The Andrews Sisters and other 40s-era jazz and swing artists; and by Queen Biscuit, a Blues band with strong connections to Topsham.
Even more local are the choir from the town’s St Margaret’s Church and the Topsham Folk Club, all giving performances throughout the day.
Spring Forward Saturday is a great example of the independent community of Topsham coming together and creating a showcase for the best in life, whether that’s artisan produce, one-off hand-made art and crafts, or feel-good entertainment.
Organised by Love Topsham – a not-for-profit community group promoting the town’s unique combination of estuary beauty and independent shopping – this event is set to be the biggest and best yet.
According to Rosie of Nest, one of the Topsham’s shop owners and the instigator of the original Spring Forward Saturday three years ago: “It’s a fantastic combination: there’s a real sense of the independent spirit of the town, shops completely unlike those anywhere else, and a day where the streets buzz with music. A day for everyone from near and far. What’s not to like?” she asks.
There will also be opportunities for visitors and residents to get hold of the 2020 Love Topsham Card giving reductions at many of the town’s shops, eateries and businesses throughout the year
All funds from the card go towards events like Spring Forward Saturday, an upcoming VE Day Anniversary party-in-the-park, publicising Topsham across Exeter and beyond, and the town’s spectacular Christmas lights at the end of the year.
