Hospiscare Men’s Walk: An Incredibly Worthwhile Cause
Hospiscare’s biggest ever Men’s Walk (sponsored by Wilkinson Grant & Exeter Brewery) returns on Saturday 16 March from the Double Locks. This ever popular fixture of a walk, pint, pasty and the rugby, sees many men take part year after year. One of those stalwarts is Rob Atkins, who completed the event for the first time in 2016 with his brother-in-law Jeff.
Rob and Jeff were walking to raise funds for the charity, which at the time was caring for Rob’s wife, Helen. Only days after the walk, however, Helen, who had been diagnosed with melanoma three years earlier, sadly died. She was 48 years old.
Since then, Rob’s determination to continue supporting Hospiscare has only grown, as he explained:
“Helen lived for the children, Leon and Georgia, and her dearest wish was to be at home with us until the end.
“When Hospiscare became involved it made a huge difference. As well as giving practical and medical help, they were so caring. Helen had never been a good patient and was petrified of needles, but with the nurses’ support she was so brave. They gave Helen back her dignity, and I can’t thank them enough.”
Rob has taken part in every Men’s Walk since the year Helen died, despite March being a difficult month for the family.
“There’s not just the anniversary of Helen’s death, there’s also our wedding anniversary and Helen’s birthday. In fact, this year`s walk falls on what would have been her 51st birthday,” he said.
“So we’re going to celebrate Helen’s life as we walk. It’s a brilliant event, an eight-mile walk with your mates and then the England v Scotland Six Nations match,” Rob said. “Most of all, though, it’s for an incredibly worthwhile cause.”
Rob’s modesty belies his achievements. Not only will this be his fourth Men’s Walk in a row, but the number of people walking with him grows each year. This year they have set themselves a fundraising target of £1,500, which overall means they will have raised an incredible sum of £4,500 in Helen’s memory.
Rob and his family and friends are among many special people who support Hospiscare, helping the charity care for patients with life-limiting illnesses and their families.
