Get Set, Grow! Zero Exeter
Name of Business: Zero Exeter
Start-Up Date: April 2019
Name of Founder: Faye Jennings Mosquera
Zero Exeter is a zero waste food, home and decor store where sustainable and ethical purchasing can be affordable whilst having a positive impact on the community and our environment. The store stocks many dried foods and goods, available to be dispensed in a self service format which enables customers to control quantities and eliminates plastic packaging. Zero Exeter stock home supplies from cleaning to accessories, hygiene and gifts and luxury interiors, all made incorporating eco or recycled materials. Zero all started from Faye’s company Chuquy, where she designed eco and luxurious hammock chairs from home.
We asked Faye to give us a little background on the business:
When I was travelling in South America I was surrounded by colour, art embedded with history and hammocks. I also met my Colombian husband, Ernesto, and started designing hammocks soon afterwards, incorporating recycled materials and natural fabrics. After a wonderful few years working from home with my young children and selling worldwide, I decided to take a leap and open a store. If everyone takes a few tiny steps forward it will have a tremendous impact on our generation and future generations.
The feedback and encouragement, so far, has been extraordinary! The amount of support I have received, since opening, is so exciting. I just hope the baby has long enough naps so I can finish painting the store!
Talk us through the day to day running of the business, and how things are going so far:
I open straight after the school drop off, 10am – 6pm , and will open the store earlier for anyone who needs additional help, or finds busy environments a little daunting. The business has been received with gratefulness and excitement, as so many have been waiting for a zero waste store, it feels wonderful to open a store that so many people have a passion for. The whole process, although exciting, has also been daunting as we are doing this project alone whilst raising two fabulous little children and whilst my husband works full time. We currently have a tag team going on and the moment he arrives home he takes over so that I can run the shop and finish painting and creating.
And finally, what are your plans for the future?
Zero waste and plastic free packaging is a progressive movement and it’s only going to grow larger and gain more followers, which is amazing. My dream is to have an eco friendly and ethical global company which provides jobs worldwide, enables myself and colleagues to have a wonderful work-life balance whilst always being transparent. Being equal is paramount to my family; creating opportunities for those in difficult circumstances, countries and environments is vital. We aim to raise awareness and funds for local and global charities.
I will be having all of my shop ethos and labels printed in Braille, and aim for my store to be accessible to the whole community. If anyone has any questions please feel free to contact me. Artisans may also get in touch to see if we can collaborate.
