Fitter Happier Kids At Kenn Church Of England Primary School
Kenn Church of England Primary School is delighted to be able to let the pupils climb the walls after a successful bid for £2000 from Cllr Alan Connett (Devon County Council) and a generous amount of fundraising by the Friends of Kenn School.
Working with Andy Tyrrell – Tyrrell Sports Coaching & Education – the Friends worked hard to raise funds by selling cakes and refreshments, organising discos, raffles, charity bag collection, second-hand uniform sales, Christmas cards and more to buy new gym equipment.
Andy Tyrrell, the school’s sports coach, had the initial idea to pull together to buy new gym equipment for the children. Andy said:
“The kid’s love to climb and this climbing frame is great for all ages from the new reception kids up to our 11-year olds. As well as developing their physical skills, this piece of equipment is great for confidence building”.
Mrs Somerwill, Executive Headteacher at Kenn Church of England Primary School commented:
“After the well-publicised cuts in school funding it has become more necessary than ever to find funding elsewhere for activities and equipment for our pupils. We are lucky to have a strong group of locals and parents who are dedicated to help us raise extra funding for us”.
Justine Fitzgerald, the Chair of the Friends of Kenn School, said:
“I am delighted that the children of our school are able to experience such brilliant equipment to learn on. This has been a real team effort with our County Council, Mr Tyrrell, the school, our fabulous Friends of Kenn members and all the parents supporting the fundraising events in whatever way they can. Our children will gain so much from this now, and in years to come. Thank you everyone!”.
Altogether the group raise £3919 – including the successful bid from Devon County Council – to buy the climbing frame, spring boards and safety mats. The climbing frame will be officially opened by Cllr McInnes at 3 – 3.30pm on Friday 5th April in the school hall, which will include a demonstration of the new equipment by pupils and refreshments.
