Volunteers Urgently Needed for CHICKS New Summer Activity Programme

Devon-based national children’s charity CHICKS is urgently calling for volunteers to launch a new summer programme of activities and prevent hundreds of children going hungry in Plymouth this summer.

CHICKS is best known for providing free, week-long respite breaks to children at retreats across the UK, and is launching a new programme of daily activities named Fit & Fed for children eligible for free school meals in Plymouth.

The programme, which aims to promote the importance of a healthy lifestyle while emboldening children with CHICKS traditional fun, outdoor activities, can only go ahead if CHICKS manages to secure the help of 14 volunteers by this Friday 28 June.

Richard Whitehouse, CHICKS Head of Respite Breaks, said:

“This is an amazing opportunity to make a real difference to the lives of some of our region’s most vulnerable children, while having an unforgettable summer.

“If you are over 18 and willing to donate your time, enthusiasm and energy to launch this vitally important new initiative then please get in touch.”

Training for volunteers will be provided from 22 – 28 July and the programme will be delivered over the following weeks: 29 July – 2 August, 5 – 9 August, 12 – 16 August, 19 – 23 August.

Under the guidance of an experienced CHICKS staff member, volunteers will work with and lead groups of children in a variety of activities, providing experiences such as beach trips, bush-craft, swimming and baking.

In addition, they will be a part of promoting a healthy, active lifestyle and the importance of making positive food choices.

Richard explained:

“The CHICKS Fit and Fed programme will follow a weekly schedule full of engaging and physically active games and activities, based both outdoors and indoors.

“The weekly schedule will also include daily healthy eating activities, which will see the young people planning meals, purchasing ingredients from our ‘store’ and preparing their own lunches, in line with recommendations from the ‘Food School Plan.”

He added:

“Full training will be provided to all those who volunteer, including group leadership skills, first aid, safe-guarding, food hygiene and healthy eating. We will also offer all volunteers the option of free accommodation at our retreat on the coast of Cornwall, as well as expenses.”

“Whether you are a student looking for the chance to gain a new experience this summer, a retiree wishing to have a real impact on young people or anyone in between, we really look forward to hearing from you.”
