Children’s Charity CHICKS Opens New Shop And Café In Exeter

National children’s charity CHICKS has opened its second UK charity shop complete with a café selling hot and cold drinks in Exeter.

The shop, which is located in Fore Street, Heavitree, follows the opening of CHICKS first shop in Union Street, Torquay, in November 2018.

The opening is part of a national effort to diversify the charity’s income streams and provide more support for children living in desperately difficult circumstances across the UK.

CHICKS charity’s Head Office is in Devon and its services are provided nationally for children aged 8 – 15-years-old including many from Exeter and the South West.

CHICKS Chief Executive Andrew Dean explained:

“Since 1992, CHICKS has provided more than 16,000 children who are living in poverty, acting as young carers or suffering the effects of bullying, abuse or bereavement with the chance to escape their worries and pressures on a week-long respite break.

“The young people who attend our breaks are given the chance to have adventures, try new things, make new friends and find their confidence.

“For some it’s the chance to heal following the loss of a loved one, or be proud of themselves for kayaking down a river, for others it’s to taste their first marshmallow toasted on an open fire or simply read a bedtime story.”

The charity relies solely on donations to fund its vital work, and needs to raise £1.8 million every year.

Andrew added:

“We are hugely grateful to all the amazing people who make such a huge difference to children’s lives by supporting CHICKS.

“We are excited to be opening our second charity shop as part of our ongoing commitment to generating increased income and enabling more children to benefit from a break with CHICKS.”

CHICKS’ new Heavitree shop is stocked with a unique collection of pre-loved men’s, women’s and children’s fashion items as well as books, DVDs, homeware, toys and bric-a-brac.

The charity is also delighted to be able to offer a selection of hot and cold refreshments that can be enjoyed in the shop’s new café or taken away.

CHICKS Director of Commerce, Victoria Aspinall, said:

“We hope our shop and café will provide the Heavitree community with a new destination to relax with a coffee and browse a unique collection of pre-loved, affordable items.

“Every pound generated by the sale of items will make a huge difference to the lives of children living in desperately difficult circumstances across the UK.

“We would like to say a huge thank you to all those who’ve visited the shop so far and all those who pay us a visit in future for their hugely valued support.”

CHICKS’ shop is open Monday – Saturday 9am to 4.30pm and Sunday’s 10am to 4pm.

The charity urgently requires on-going donations of fashion, accessories, bric-a-brac, homeware, books and DVDs and has a number of volunteering opportunities available for those interested in joining its new Retail Team.
