Jane Chanot; The Family Law Company
Written by Jane Chanot
I am a Solicitor, Director and Head of Department for The Family Law Company’s Private Children, Domestic Abuse and Child Abduction team. I undertake work within those areas as well as divorce and financial cases.
My interest in law was sparked when I studied A Level Law at evening class whilst working full time as a civil servant in London. I decided to leave my job to study for a Law Degree. I then went on to do Law Society Finals and Articles for two years, qualifying as a Solicitor in 1992.
Having worked for seven years at a solicitors in Weybridge, Surrey I moved to Devon in 1997 and joined Norman Hartnell at what was then Hartnell & Co in Exeter. I have been a Partner and now Director with the business since 1999. During that time, I qualified as a mediator and collaborative law lawyer.
I would say my approach to family law is a holistic one supporting clients to find solutions to the issues that arise using negotiation or, where necessary, litigation. I always maintain an awareness of the emotive nature of family work and a desire to see appropriate resolution without involvement of the Courts wherever possible.
