Payroll, a cost and a commodity; it’s the reason we go to work and what makes the world go round but this essential function within small business is often overlooked. With National Payroll Week celebrating its 21st birthday this year, we highlight the important role payroll practitioners play in the workplace.

Pay day for most is a time of the month filled with joy, making all the stress of work worthwhile and providing an opportunity for a little treat; but behind the emotions wage packets invoke is a payrolling superhero ensuring your employees are paid correctly and on time.

The procedure of payrolling is an intricate calculation of employee pay, annual leave, earnings attachments and allowable deductions in line with thresholds and regulations that are ever changing. Payrolling has been around for hundreds of years with the first ‘Pay Masters’ referenced in the 16th century, but at all times it has been about far more than just totting up timesheets and pressing buttons.

In an industry that generates £301bn in revenue for HMRC through the collection of tax and National insurance, the Chartered Institute of Payroll Professionals (CIPP) celebrates it’s practitioners each year during it’s annual payroll week. This year it will take place from 2-6th September 2019 as a way of getting the word out there about how we as payroll professionals ‘keep the UK paid.’

Show your support for the profession this September with the hashtag #NPW19.
