1.7 Jobs for Each Person in the Local Area
Employment is high and growth in and around Exeter shows no sign of slowing down. A statistic I heard recently really brought this home to me – that there are now 1.7 jobs for each person in the local area.
We’re a member of the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) – the professional body for recruitment – who keep us up to date with relevant news and information, amongst other things. They recently published their latest Jobs Outlook report that looks at the hiring intentions of UK employers. Here are some of the highlights.
- Employer confidence in the prospects for the UK economy continues to improve
- 50% of UK employers who hire permanent anticipate it being tricky to attract applicants
- 3/4 of employers said they had little or no workforce capacity – meaning that any increase in demand would likely result in hiring new team members
In the next 3 months 24% of employers said they intended to increase their permanent headcount. Looking longer term, 23% said they planned to increase permanent headcount over the next 12 months. And while unemployment remains low – interestingly it’s not falling for all age groups. In the last quarter, those aged 18-24 and 50+ saw an increase.
